Microscape and Microscape 2 are based on scanning electron microscope images of the microscopic patterns on the surface of amphipods. Amphipods are tiny shrimp like creatures that swim in the water, burrow in mud or live on the beach. "Sand Fleas" are a type of amphipod that is sometimes seen jumping on beaches at low tide.
Microscape 3 and 4 are based on microscopic surface patterns of a terrestrial spider.
