Diatoms are aquatic single-celled plants that are so small they can only be seen with a microscope. They produce much of the world's oxygen. They have complex multi-layered cell walls that are incredibly beautiful. Photographs taken with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) during my scientific career as a marine biologist motivated these pieces. This series is based on diatom surface patterns seen with a scanning electron microscope. Several layers of fabric were used; openings in the top layers reveal textured layers below.
